final emmy viewing - 4

This is the fourth and last category that I commited to vote on for the Emmys....And it is:

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

This was a very interesting category because there are six nominees instead of the usual five----there must have been a tie in the previous voting. Also, it is a strange category, because some of these same actresses might be in the 'Leading Actress In A Drama' category....I can think of three, right off the bat....And I have a feeling more of you will have an opinion about this category...(lol)...And the nominees are, in alphabetical order:

LORRAINE BRACO: As Dr. Jennifer Melfi in "The Sopranos" This was the last season for 'The Sopranos', and I for one will this show very very much. Lorraine Brocco has been with the show from the very beginning and has the difficult job of playing Tony Soprano's shrink....She is a wonderfully consistant and talented actress and does an admirable job in this part, always attempting to remain the caring professional without becoming too involved with the 'nuts and bolts' of her sociopathic patient.

RACHEL GRIFFITHS: As Sarah Whedon in "Brothers & Sisters" Rachel Griffiths is another extremely talented actress who is always wonderful in whatever part she plays. In this series, she is the daughter that has taken over her fathers business after his untimely death, while attempting to keep her marriage and and her children, as well as the rest of her interesting family, in the forefront of her world. I've never seen her give a bad performance!

KATHERINE HEIGL: As Isobel 'Izzie' Stevens in "Grey's Anatony"Kathrine Heigl is a lovely actress who is having a wonderful career on 'the big screen' as well as in this very popular series. Last season the 'arc' of her character went through a great loss, and in this most recent season, her character has been finding her way back to being the doctor she hopes to be, plus some other interesting challanges.

SANDRA OH: As Cristina Yang in "Grey's Anatomy" Sandra Oh is another wonderful actress who has appeared on the 'big screen' as well as the small screen, and always very successfully...Again, a serious actress who's character had some very BIG challenges this year, not the least of which was her wedding that didn't happen...plus, the covering for and helping out of her fiance who's ability to operate was very compromised by a severe injury...She was very much up to the task!

AIDA TURTURRO: As Janice Soprano in "The Sopranos" Aida Turturro plays a very complex interesting character on 'The Sopranos'....As Tony's sister, she is as dysfuncyinal as he is....A difficult part, but one which this extremely talented actress was very much 'up to' from the very beginning of her tenure on this terrific show. Another superb performance in this difficult category.....

CHANDRA WILSON: As Dr. Bailey in "Greys Anatomy" Chandra Wilson to my way of thinking belongs in this category in the purest sense.....She is a wonderful actress who "supports" the other 'lead' actors every time out of the box.....And she is good--times ten!

Weather she will win is questionable only because the particular show that she chose for our viewing in comparison to what all the others chose for our viewing, (particularly Sandra Oh, whos episode was really more like a "lead" peformance than a "supporting" one....) was only a little over 12 minutes of screen time....But make no mistake, Chandra Wilson is top drawer!

I need to say a little bit more about this viewing and voting and the importance of the show or scenes from the shows that the individual people pick "For Your Consideration"....This is what you are voting on...NOT the body of the person's work during the season or in other things....You are asked to vote on exactly what you saw----what you have been presented with on each individual DVD specifically chosen by the nominee for this purpose. Each person has to give it their best shot.....I mention this only to say, this often makes the choice more difficult, but that's the way it is.

So....once again, my vote is in! I realize none of you have seen the exact episodes I saw on a "stand alone" basis....but I'd still like to know in a general way who you might vote for....

Update: The heat was not as bad today...not good, mind you, but not as bad...I'm still feeling punk, and so continue to lay low...Thank You ALL for yur kind words and understanding....They say Wednesday will be cooler....I hope the weather people are correct about this....it will be a welcome break for me.....

More To Come......

Can't vote. I am biased. I am a fan of Grey's Anatomy, lol. In fact, the new season starts tonight. We are one season behind, though.

And I truly hope your weatherman is right, wishing you pleasant temperatures :)

Haven't seen enough of these to offer a vote. Think in voting sometimes, i.e. Oscar movie voting, some may have a tendancy to consider a "body of work" vs a specific movie, or in this case with the Emmys, a scene, as you described. Good that you follow that specified differentiation.

It was cooler today where I am, too, thank heavens. Fortunately, I haven't needed to leave the house the past couple of days. Think the slight cooling is supposed to continue for you and for me. Let's hope so. Hope you're feeling a bit perkier.

I think I really need to get a life! The only actress I can recognise is Sandra Oh, and that is because she is Canadian! And I have watched odds and ends of those TV shows, but have never watched an episode from start to finish. Perhaps that's why the Emmy poobahs didn't ask me to vote???

I've never seen a single episode of ANY of them... but I'm betting one of the Grey's Anatomy nominees wins. I don't think I know a single person who doesn't just devour that show! HOWEVER... I do think you should come visit ME... as I have my own little Leading Lady roll going on!!!

The only show I've seen is Grey's Anatomy, and I think all three off those actresses are wonderful, but I think Chandra Wilson is absolutely amazing, so my vote would be for her...lol!

Finally shows I know! Ha! I don't watch them, though. I used to be a huge fan of the Sopranos ... but then it kept taking those huge breaks between seasons and I lost interest.

Sandra Oh was fab in "Sideways"!

Grey's Anatomy was the show everyone talked about last year and I have yet to see one episode. After this post, I'm going to see if I can catch the reruns!

I wonder, in a jury, what would I give first priority : i.e. What would I first of all look for, then secondly and so forth, to descide who is my premium choice?
One thing is the text, the whole cast, the setting with lights and costumes etc, scenograhy, the room for acting (directors will or the actors participations and ideas etc). It's so much to consider what's good and whats excellent.

give me some hints how you look at it. when you have to judge. Not using these finalists as an example, but in general...

Oh, wow...Naomi. You really had your work cut out for you in this one! Each time I'd scroll down to see the next one, I'd groan. Because I LOVE all of them! I watch the Sopranos now (repeats) on A&E, I watch Brothers & Sisters and LOVE that show and I watch Gray's Anatomy. What a tough choice for you. I do realize you were only able to vote on a particular show/episode, but still....
Okay....my vote would have to be Sarah on Brothers & Sisters....I thought she did a remarkable job with her character this year. But I really want ALL of them to win..lol
Your vote...hmmm......either Sarah or maybe Tony's shrink?
Anxious to see the results when you can release them.

I'm just catching up on missed blogs while on vacation. Unfortunately, I can't get HBO so although I've enjoyed a few reruns of The Sopranos I'm more familiar with Grey's Anatomy. Among the nominees, Katherne Heigl has been a standout to me since I first saw her in Love Comes Softly. I hope she wins.

Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at 3:40:00 PM PDT

had this to say:

I don't think this was Grey's greatest season. Watching reruns on Lifetime is like watching a different show! Katherine Heigl's best performance was the Denny season. Chandra is good but, not Sandra Oh good. That last scene in the season finale when she breaks down in her wedding dress, fantastic.

Lorraine is who you will vote for, I'm guessing and who will win and who should get it, I guess.

Was it cooler today

I think Sally Field looks more like the daughter, still looks like Gidget! I don't watch any of these shows so it would be hard to say. I guess all is lost for Studio 60. Hope something of its caliber will replace it.

Feel better, Naomi!

I think Chandra Wilson is great, even though I have only ever seen a few episodes of Grey's Anatomy before. Rachel Griffiths really annoys me for some reason (I can bag her as she's a fellow Aussie) and I really despise her character in Brothers and Sisters. But then, I guess that's what a good actor does...

I must be the only woman on the planet who has not see "Grey's Anatomy", "Brothers and Sisters" or "The Sopranos." I want to, though. So, for my birthday, which is today (so I'm the "old lady today ;), I'm going to rent the DVDs for these series throughout the yr.

I hope it cools WAY down for you, dear Naomi. Where I live in the Washington D.C. area, the humidity combines with heat and pollution to make a yuckky combination. Luckily, it's not been in the three digits here recently. You take care, dear.

Ihope that the weather has cooled abit for you by now.

I am a huge Greys Anatomy Fan but would be hard pressed to have to decide which of the three actresses to choose - they are all great.

All great actresses and performances. Grey's Anatomy was a great show, but somehow they got too soap opera-ish and lost me this last season. Too much drama and bed hopping! All the nominated actresses from that show are awesome but my favorite is Chandra Wilson. It's a tough line to walk with her character and she nails it every time. Amazing! Oh, and the chick from Brothers and Sisters (sorry I can't remember her name) I loved her in HBO's Six Feet Under and felt she did better acting there so maybe I had higher expectations when I watched her on Brothers and Sisters. She still gave fine performances, I just didn't think she had as much to work with on B&S the few times I watched it.

That one is too tough. I like all those women. Though I'd not vote for Tony's shrink after she abandoned him and I don't like her anymore! I do think the cute little blonde on Grey's is worthy and Sandra Oh...I think I'd go with Janice though, especially knowing the show is over. I'd be a nice tribute.

I am always amazed that you make a distinction between some of the performances as it must be agonising at times, trying to choose between them. It must also be difficult to divorce yourself from they're other work, but I am certain that if anyone manages it, you do as I know fairness is very importnat to you. I can't tell you enough, how much I applaud that quality in you.

I do hope the heat has been less and that you have been more comfortable. Continue to take it easy as it has to abate at some point! Take care of you and Sweetie!

Issy's character annoyed me this season, I too think her best acting was last season.
I would probably go for Rachel Griffiths, it seems like Brothers and Sisters might be the new hot show this awards season.
I only started watching it to see Ron LOL

I've seen Rachel Griffiths in a few movie roles, each very different from one another.
She is simply marvelous.
You are kind of like a jury when told to consider only certain evidence and to dismiss other evidence.
You have to vote based soley on the DVD submitted for you to view. THAT would be hard, especially if you've seen the actresses in a variety of other roles. You have to try and throw out what you already know about their work and talent.
I'm sure you were able to do that, but it had to have been hard.

Honestly, I could not choose from this field. Each and every one of those women are spectacular actors.

I love Grey's, but was really disappointed in Season three. The writing has suffered, but the acting never wavers. That's a testament to those women.

And The Sopranos... well, what can we say? Never misses a beat.

I loved Rachel Griffiths in Six Feet Under, but I haven't warmed to Brothers and Sisters.

Can't wait for the Emmys!

(And have to comment on a comment:
Terri... you cannot watch The Sopranos on A&E!!!! Get the DVDs!! They cut the show to bits.)

I like how you described the function of the supporting actress - and truly, those are the more interesting parts, aren't they? Although the leading actors/actresses get the bigger billing and sometimes the supporting actor/actress nod is given to recognize a newcomer or reward a long-term player. Rambling, I know...
