it's fowl, fowl, fowl

You asked for it and here they are! You can see the Chickens/Roosters in this little Video....they are there and moving about a bit......It was a very cold windy somewhat dark day.....so, not the greatest video ever, but.....proof that there are some kind of 'fowl' living below.....And this next little video shows a very cute puppy who seems to be quite interested in the 'fowl', too!

I also got a few pictures of those two critters....and here they are, below......It turned out they were eating something out of a little round white dish....Seeds or something like that.....Here below you can see that little dish!I must admit they are really kind of cute....! I just hope I still feel that way in a few weeks! (lol)Remember I mentioned the 'food bin'? Well, here is a picture of it....And it has all sorts of stuff in it. Orange Rinds, some Vegetables, and other stuff that I cannot tell what it is....etc....And, the other structure that is being built? Well as you can see from this picture below, there is barely anything there yet, but I noticed that there is a small sliding window that is quite prominent.....Better to retrieve eggs from.....?And a closer look at that sliding window below.....This little window tells me that more 'fowl' are probably on their way.....Well, it will be very interesting to see how this all plays out.....Meanwhile, here is one more picture of the 'fowl' that are living there right now......Like I said....they are kinda cute!

More To Come.......

Naomi, the good news for me is the video now plays. Now about those cute chickens.
Is a Rooster on the way? What fun that would be for you lol.

It's strange to think of a mini farm being built in the Hills. The fowl are cute and they are watchable BUT if the owners aren't very dilligent about cleaning the pens the fowl will become foul. Open compost bins are not sniff friendly, either. The saga of The Hills continues. Please update.

it would be interesting to know why they decided to do this! I just hope it's all built to where those coyotes can't ever get at them.. if they are for laying eggs the coyotes might scare them enough not to lay eggs!

I'm wondering if it's within the local bylaws to keep chickens or any kind of domestic fowl within city limits. It's certainly something that is banned here where I live, no farm animals allowed, that includes chickens! And pigs and horses and cows etc etc,... but there's no room for big animals like that in my back garden anyway!
Great pictures, you'll soon be known as Naomi, Private Eye of the Hills!

Oh, my dear Naomi! That open thing is for sure a compost bin! Have a feeling that will get down right nasty if the winds blow a certain way!

Are fowl allowed in the city? Aren't they considered farm animals???

Although I almost can't blame them if they are doing it for fresh eggs...I don't know what they are costing in your area - but here at the local market - they are right at $2.00 a dozen...and if you want fresh ones from a local farm - you can expect to pay $4.00 a dozen!!!

And, it's not like we can do without eggs!!! Mother eats two eggs a day...so just for her I buy 5 dozen a month...if I want any or I intend to bake then it's usually another 4 - 5 dozen...

Make friends with these neighbors. If anymore chickens join them, they may soon have too many eggs for their family and, trust me, fresh eggs are NOTHING like the eggs you buy in the store!

Mmmmm....

Great photos and videos:-). Good luck with having new critters of both kinds (human and farm)*giggles*. I bet this is really going to be bringing unwanted critters around like the coyotes and such even more *Yikes*. What I don't really understand is why didn't they just buy some land somewhere to have a little farm? To each his own I know, but I see it as some folks like city life and others country life, so why go mixing the two?:-). Just sayin..
Keep the updates coming:-).
Have a wonderful day!!

G'day from Down Under,

Thanks for giving us the whole picture, so to speak. Here in Australia we call them ``chooks''!

Does your zoning allow chickens? It looks like these folks are into back to earth thinking. Hopefully no rooster although I have roosters not too far from me when I am in Tucson and I don't mind the crowing. Better than dogs barking all night which I also get down there...

The fowls are beautiful! Can you hear their cackle and crow in your deck? There is a rooster too? It's strange to have a mini grange being built in a high priced square meter as the Hollywood Hills. I would like to be update! Lol! Many hugs!

Naomi, you wanted to know about Haggis!!
Well.... the traditional ingredients are sheep's heart, liver and lungs, minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, and traditionally boiled in a sheep's stomach for approximately three hours. Sounds awful, right? I
don't know that the haggis we had at our Burns Supper were made this way, I don't think it would contain lungs, I hope not anyway. I usually just shut my eyes and eat it! It's quite tasty and very peppery, but for me, it really needs an accompaniment of gravy to enable me to swallow it!
But I am sure you would like the rest of the Burns Supper food.... the "Chappit Neeps" are my favourite. Mashed yellow turnip (sometimes called rutabaga in Canada, not sure about in L.A.) with salt, pepper, butter, sour cream, and cream cheese, then baked in the oven with some white sauce and a cheese topping, mmmmmm, divine!

too cool! but i didn't see the puppy. i'm thinking the compost bin won't stink too much...it's pretty small, open, and L.A. is desert, y'know. what a great show in your own back yard!! well, ALMOST in your own back yard. you have chickens running around. i have republicans.

That's cool. Maybe you can get hooked up for purchasing fresh eggs. I'm encouraged to see people providing their own food so directly no matter where they live.

Gee, I'm glad I don't live next door to you! *snigger snigger*!! I love the title of this post - made me laugh... That's one big compost bin - but they do need to keep a lid on it, it will tend to be a bit whiffy in times to come (when it starts to heat up)...

Like everyone else said, there is nothing like fresh eggs, especially when you're a bit of a baker like me.

Naomi,
Fresh eggs - not enough of a compensation for the rats, coyotes and smell.

These people are living in a major urban area/metropolitan city - not the countryside/farmbelts in oklahoma or kansas or Iowa...

Okay, enough of my bad attitude - these neighbors seem inconsiderate and self-centered from the get-go.

Will the rooster be waking you up at 5:00 a.m. next ? And are you supposed to find it all charming ? Bah humbug.

Get the city inspector to shut their green acres fantasies down a.s.a.p.

Your neighbors must be going organic and want the chickens to eat bugs and fertilize at the same time. I just hope the coyotes don't get them. I have yet to see a coyote but they have become a big problem for our county and one got my best friend's little kitty one night. It just broke her heart.

BTW- I did award your blog the Excellent Blog award tonight. You don't have to accept but just know you are excellent.

Hi Dearest Naomi, Danny finally taught me how to leave a comment by hitting "nickname" which made for some more confusion on my befuddled part b/c then I thought I had to sign a comment with a nickname. (When in doubt, I just use "hotpants") But he told me no, I could actually just sign Kendall. So anyway, just wanted to tell you how much I am loving your videos, your very brave coming forward as a six-bowl-a-day Sweetie chef/waitress and now the foul fowl saga. We actually had a rooster across the street for awhile. Danny did find I believe a city ordinance against rooster harboring, but the rooster disappeared before he could protest. Hey, I didn't see the puppy on the second video? Did I miss something? Always a strong possibility! Keep up the good work!

Naomi, You are pretty quick with that camera. I wonder what the zoning laws are in your neighborhood....I hope the compost bin doesn't bring in too many rats and bugs. My dad had a compost pile, as he called it, and we had to watch for varmits.....Have fun watching the chickens.

Great video of the chickens. Looks like they are getting an actual coop built, though I think the sliding window would be more for entering and exiting the coop.
My dad has chickens and they run all over the place in his yard. He has yet to have one get hit on the busy road that his house sits back from. We love eating fresh eggs when we visit, they are more filling that store bought eggs, for all that they are smaller. Far as I know he hasn't had a vermin problem.

How sad it is that so many comments urge you to "get rid of" your neighbors' pets, suggesting ways to make trouble before there is any evidence the owners will not care for them responsibly. Parrots, parakeets, cockateils, canaries etc. would not evoke this response. But chickens--well, they're considered "low class"---like African Americans once were--and the prejudice and bigotry oozes right up to the surface, complete with rationalizations about safety, pests, zoning etc.

Making contact with the neighbors makes sense. You're a good research person and can help them find ways to keep the clucks safe, happy and not a nuisance. Roosters can be a noise problem. I think minor surgery on the throat (not the other end!!)can let them engage in crowing behavior, but not make a loud noise. That's not too high a price for Chanticleer to pay for good food and protection from the coyotes (and soup pot). I'm always praying for tolerance and understanding--I hope it's answered up on your hill, so that everyone, including the chickens, can live in peace and harmony.
