hummingbird

Here are an amazing group of pictures, even if I do say so, myself! Okay, this little guy had landed on the Waterfall, as you can see, below..... I kept snapping away, hoping to catch a picture in better focus....and then I got this one which is not perfect focus, but pretty damn good, considering that this little guy was moving, almost constanly.... And then, magically, he moved off of the Waterfall very quickly, as Hummingbirds do, and landed on a plant nearer to me than the waterfall..... And what he was doing was cleaning himself, including his wings, after his bath.....!And here, below, is another view of this dear little Hummer flapping those very important wings of his....Awesome little bird!

I love that you can see a tiny drop of water on the end of his beak in that picture above....

And at times he would take his beak and clean his feathers a bit using it, as he is doing in this picture below.....
And then, below, the last of these pictures of this fascinating little bird.... As many of you know and understand the quickness of these birds....this was a great great day for me, as a photographer and as a person.....I just love these dear little birds and to be able to observe one so closely as he did his ablutions.....well, what can I say.....It was like taking dope, I think...What a High! Something like this---being able to capture the beauty of nature in this way----gives me so much, I cannot even express it in words....Especially at this time in my life....these moments are such a true true gift....! I cherish them, believe me.

Note: A Very Very Happy Birthday to my dear friend Betty Garrett....today, May 23rd, she is 88 years old....Incredible! And tomorrow we are having a "Ladies Who Lunch", (right here in my house), to celebrate the gift of her friendship....Pictures will be forthcoming......

More To Come......

Lovely! :) I haven't seen hummers for a couple of years, since I lived a bit more west of you. Weird how a few miles can make a difference. Hope you and your friends have a fun b-day celebration for Betty! I haven't been around much in a while. Oh, also remembered you mentioned the DeLuises a while back. My good friend did some pics of Dom - www.fewsmith.com
Great guy.
Have a wonderful week, Naomi!

Good Morn, are not Gods creatures GREAT. It is still a little cool here but I have a humming bird feeder, that needs to come out and get cleaned up. My humming birds that come around, really like purple, have a small flower bed outside, of my kitchen window, on ledge of window sill, had a medicine box (purple) and that little bird, comes up to my window, and stairs at the box. The first time i noticed him, he surprised me, but any way can not wait for him to come back. Thank you again for sharing. pat

First off....Please wish Betty a very Happy Birthday from me. And all of you enjoy your lunch. Looking forward to the photos and details.
You certainly are quite proficient with that camera! I know how difficult it is to capture hummingbirds, because of their constant movement. But you did a spectacular job!
(Where on earth did you get that amazing water fall? I'd love to get one for my outside patio! The island birds would love it.)

So close! I never get to look at one for long in real life because they are always on the go! I have been trying to photograph the indigo buntings, yellow finch, and red cardinals in my yard with not much luck. I spend too much time on it for the results I get, but I do understand how exciting it can be when you get one! I love the background swirl behind the humming bird. It looks like it's coming out of a vortex. I guess birds are natually high...up in the sky like that.

Hummingbirds are my most favorite birds. They just amaze me. At my uncles Lake house, he had this wrap around porch and he had 3 hummingbird feeders right next to eachother. We would sit outside on the porch, literally directly under or next to those feeders and 5-10 hummingbirds would come and eat and not be scared by us at all. You could hear their wings buzz! Those are great pictures. I love them!

Seeing your garden and the visitors it attracts always make me want to move to warmer climes - though I guess with Global Warming those climes are coming to me.... [chuckle].

We had humming birds by the score down in Mississippi. From late April to the end of October. Most were a green color with a red stripe around the neck... one or two had completely red heads. They love the red nectar we put out. Great pictures!

Naomi, thanks for the visit and comments about the poison ivy. In the last 2 pics, that IS poison ivy vine climbing up the trees, and all the green leaves you see in the pics are poison ivy leaves. One of the trees is an oak and the other is either a maple or a poplar.

My grandfather is an avid bird lover and when he used to live in a house with a lot of property, he had hummingbird feeders throughout his garden. After dinner, my grandparents, my parents and the kids would sit on the porch and watch and listen to the birds fly around.

I am not sure if this was a coincidence or not but on the 23rd HERE they played Out on the Town on TCM here that day and I happened to have seen part of it. Quite spooky really lol.
