creativity & education

Two dear friends of mine sent me this link...and it is a fantastic talk by Sir Ken Robinson about 'creativity' given at TED.

Grab a cup of coffee or a cup of tea or a dish of ice cream, and settle back to watch and listen to this brilliant man talk about education and creativity. You won't be sorry, I promise you....but know, it is almost twenty minutes long....so sit back and relax and be amused and mesmerized and moved.....And if you don't have twenty minutes right now, please copy the link because this man speaks to the great importance of creativity and education, and the encouraging and nurturing of this creativity in our children.

A few words about what happened yesterday in Virginia: It is so deeply shocking that it makes you sick to your stomach....My heart goes out to the family's of all those cut down in this horrific manner....To all those that perished or were wounded in this senseless almost too horrible to contemplate way, all the prayers of the universe are with you and yours. May God Bless You All.

I'm off to work this morning, so I will see it later.

I think we must pray unceasingly for those people.

Have just finished watching the talk by Sir Ken Robinson (what an entertaining man he is!!) and couldn't agree more with the points he raises. Interestingly enough, this was the focus on education of the course I did in primary teaching - ie that we should educate children for their whole being, not just with an academic focus in mind. I think many of the university courses now have a huge emphasis on helping children to learn in a myriad of different ways ie not just visually via reading, but through art, music, through role-play, discussion, debate, or whatever it may be. I know a lot of graduate teachers move into the workplace with this philosphy in mind, but many of the schools are still run with an 'old school' (read: academic) focus in place, and I think it will take some time before this shifts. But it is shifting, and it needs to do!

One of the main reasons we chose to enrol Holly in a private school is so that she has the opportunity to follow whatever talents/interests she may have, whether they be academic, sporting, artistic, whatever. That is so important to us as parents, because in the end, the *purpose* of education - for us anyway - is to live as full a life as possible!!

I particularly enjoyed hearing the story about the little girl who couldn't sit still - went on to dance classes and be one of the most respected/talented dancers in history - which she certainly wouldn't have been if she'd been 'medicated' for having ADD.

Thanks Naomi for this great link. Fabulous stuff!! Apologies for the long rant, but this is something I feel passionate about also.

Hi there,
I'm Beverly, the blogger who met Judy yesterday. We had a delightful time, and in talking about bloggers, we talked about you. Judy asked me if I knew you, and I said that I had been to your blog but had never commented. I probably checked out your link from Melange.

Yesterday's tragedy was one of the most heart wrenching in my lifetime. My heart, too, is with all of these families - as are my prayers.

I don't have time to watch this clip right now -- but I am copying and look forward to watching it later tonight. Thanks Naomi!

I'm still in shock for the people in Virginia...it's just so surreal...I feel so sad inside.

I also wanted to let you know that I have awarded you the “thinking blogger award” in my blog…you deserve it…

Thank you for posting this, Naomi. I've saved the link off to the side and will watch it during a quiet moment later this week. Tonight, I'm busy finishing off a bunch of writing in time for tomorrow morning's weekly deadline, then getting ready for a live TV hit. It never ends...

But I'll keep this in mind, and will smile just knowing that it awaits. Once again, you've leveraged your capacity to inspire. Thanks for that.

Creativity is so important. Where would we be without it? No books, no films or poetry, man would still be on the ground, problems would remain unsolved and no wheel even! The list is endless. It is certainly something to be nurtured adn not surpressed.

I'm studying for an exam at the moment but I will check out the link afterwards. I did a module on 'Creativity' for my MBA and it is a much more complex subject than some might expect!

We lost power. I'll come back when I can plug in. The loss of power sort of mirrors the feelings around here right now and forces us to stop watching the coverage.

I logged on late last evening and copied the link so i could read it tonight.
As for the terrifying massive loss of innocent lives at Virginia Tech, I pray with every American that the families and friends of all the victims are held close in God's arms during these terrible heartbreaking days and always.

Oh, Naomi, I can't thank you enough for directing me to that talk! I squeezed in the 20 min. just now to listen to it and I'm SO glad I did. I agree wholeheartedly with all he said. I was so impressed with TED that I joined and I plan to blog something from it every week. What a great site. Everything I glanced at there was profound and thank you again!
I've gotta run, but will return later to read your latest post. Happy Saturday to you.
