He managed to stay fresh and interesting for a long time, as opposed to many comics whose acts grow tiresome after a bit.
Cheers.
He was certainly a master at what he did! And a lot smarter than most gave him credit for... He was around so long that no matter what you thought of him.. there was always SOMETHING he said to make you laugh!
He has been my favorite since the days of the Smothers Brothers. I will mourn him too, Naomi.
He was extremely funny!
Yes, he was good but he could cut to the quick and tear a person down in a flash.
I remember his hippy dippy weather man. Yes, another one done for the count.
This is the time when getting old is a bummer.
I was going to write a blurb on my blog about George Carlin, but changed my mind due to so many bloggers posting on his death.
But now I read that Dodi Goodman died yesterday and that makes two deaths this week. I like her dippy mother character in Mary Hartman and her many movie performances years ago. She was 93 and died at the Actors Fund Home in New Jersey.
And, I don't want to hear a number three as deaths come in threes.
Rest in Peace, George, You will be missed.
George was a classic. He was briliant, hysterical, and always pertinent. He will definitely be missed!
I was very saddened to hear of his death...His comedy was genius! I used to love his play on words...
I wrote a similar post with some favorite "Carlinisms"
He was my favorite comedian. We saw him on stage a couple of years ago and it was great. He will be missed.
Gosh he sounds like a truly humourous man and may he rest in peace.
We bought a book of his some years ago, and it was truly laugh-out-loud funny. I was sad to hear of his death.
I've said it before, but he's the first comedian to ever shock me in a good way. I loved George Carlin!
I'll miss him and his wonderful outlook on life. These quotes are fantastic. Thanks for reminding me of all the things that made this man a star.
Nice tribute. He'll be missed.
I don't ever remember seeing him (probably did but didn't know who it was at the time), but my husband liked him! He has told me some of the funny stuff George talked about. He will be missed.
I like what Jon Stewart said and I agree: "I'm getting awfully tired of people we need, leaving us.”
Carlin was brilliant.
Hi Naomi. Thank you for the special post and tribute on George Carlin...he candidly put 'food in words' to humor. Unforgettable.
George Carlin was so different than other comedians and he was so right on about social, political & religious things in our society. Things that don't make sense, yet most of us never take the time to question, or challenge.
There will never be another George Carlin, that's for fucking sure.
As my age advances... and prominent people of my generation pass away... I pinch myself just to make sure I'm still here, and think "thank goodness it's not my turn yet"!
I didn't really follow George Carlin's career, but obviously he was wll thought of by many many people.
He was one-of-a-kind. He'll be missed
His portrayal of Cardinal Glick on Dogma was my favorite of his roles. He played it perfectly. :)
Hi Naomi,
These are some great lines!
He was a funny guy.
Cheers!
He will be missed. He did have the gift of staying vital, interesting and still speaking his truth right to the end of his life. He never got stale and he knew how to exit. Just seems he did it too soon and left us wanting more. The ultimate tribute.
I rarely put stuff from others on my blog..but oddly, last week, I had posted a whole thing he did, because I liked him so much. He died a cpl days later.
It was such a pleasure to introduce his work to my husband only few yrs ago...as hubby is from france, and growing up he only spoke french. Now as an adult, and fluent in english I had rented some of his dvds ...and hubby fell in love with him also. He will be deeply missed...If there is one solice its, that he will now finally join the wife he loved very much.
If you never laughed out loud at George Carlin's brand of humor, your funny bone might be in serious need of orthopedic surgery.
One of my very favorite memories was of my Dad and I watching George on TV in maybe 1974. it was just the two of us and we could not stop laughing and I fell off the couch and was slapping the floor. My Dad was holding his sides, because his ribs started to hurt. Some of that bit was "What does a dog do on his day off? He can't just lay around, that's his job." and "How do you throw away an old garbage can?"
Congrats on your 500th post and thanks for the nod. It's always a pleasure to visit here. We've both met Jammie J, so we're only 1 degree of separation!
I saw him about 2 years ago... Mike got the tickets... I had never really heard of him before that... I was saying on the day I heard he died... wonder what he is saying and doing at the pearly gates... causing some kind of havoc no doubt... take care
My nephew has a T shirt with the tequila joke on it. Brilliant!
He was such a brilliant man. Thankfully we have hours and hours of video of him to remember him and his brilliance.
