sweetie dear

Here is my dear dear Sweetie sleeping on his favorite spot. This morning, my darling kitty had a major haircut....! This was really needed quite badly. His fur was so matted and knotted---it was the worst it has ever been....It was impossible! It took me about six weeks to find a Mobile Groomer, and one that really understands how to work with cats! So, here below is a picture of my honey, early tonight. The contrast of how he looks with all his fur and how he looks now is quite startling..... Here above, how he looks right now....This is a really "close" shave.....And below, in earlier times..... Another contrasting duo of pictures, below..... He sure looks different, doesn't he? And one more pair of "contrasts"....... And before the haircut......And just because it is really hard to tell how 'shorn' he is, I took a little Video of him as he was washing tonight......He really is the dearest cat. And he did so well today.....I am very proud of him!

He really looks quite adorable! And I think he is much happier now that all that matted stuff is gone! This year it really was the worst it has ever been. The Groomer, Michael, was telling me that as cats get older, (Sweetie is almost 9) their hormones change and their fur grows in thicker and thicker....That certainly has been true of my dear one. And at least this year we won't be going through all of this......His fur will all grow back in evenly and neatly and then he will look like his old self, once again....

Yes, indeed....before you know it, he will be back to his full blown coat in all it's beauty....And it will be neat and clean just like in this picture above....But, till then, he will be known as 'The Furless One'....

More To Come.......

I think I need one of those hair cuts !

Sweetie should be a lot happier without the matting and it's a good time of year to get it done too - summer's on the way so he'll be cooler with less hair :-)

I think Sweetie looks cute! We do the same to our Persian, Owen every few months. He gets a "lion cut" and seems to like it. Especially in the peak months of the desert heat-even with the A/C on it is still warmer in the house.. Sweetie is just SO CUTE!

Hi Naomi! Curious...what do you do with its furs?

What lovely furry cat (last pic)!

Sweetie is so beautiful, Naomi! He looks adorable! Love the hair cut because I think it is more comfortable to him. Love also his tail like a lion style, LOL! We love our pets, isn't! They give to us much love and happiness!

Great photos and amazing video too!
Have a nice Sunday!
Many hugs to both of you!

Please tell Sweetie from me that I think he looks years younger. He must have total trust in you.
E-mail coming.

I hope he doesn't get too cold without his fur coat! When I had a long-haired Persian cat, he hated to be shorn and walked around with his head hung down as if he was ashamed of the way he looked.

I've heard wonderful things about the "Furminator" -- if you google it, you'll find their official website and places you can buy them online. There's one that is a 3" professional tool for both cats and dogs. With five of those feline critters roaming around my house, I've seriously been giving consideration to buying one of those things.

Your darling sweetie is precious and such a good boy. He's beautiful with his gorgeous coat and with his summer look. I know a lot of boys who get a buzz cut in anticipation of summertime! :)

Cheers.

Sweetie really looks cute either way. I can understand how those mats get in their long hair. It must be hard for them.

That was interesting about the fact that their hair comes in thicker as they age. Killian is 12 (well, almost) - and I've noticed his hair seems softer - maybe it's because it is thicker.

His vet told him he was "Handsome!"

You are right, he is kinda furless (read bald! LOL) but probably much more comfortable. I suspect he will be grooming (bathing himself) for a while until that haircut itch simmers down.

Great photos, as usual.

I'm sure that dear Sweetie appreciates all you are doing for him, even though he probably feels a bit embarrassed at first! We all feel a bit self conscious after a haircut don't we???
We always had Wendydog our Golden Retriever shaved at the start of the summer, and my son's Puppy Tessa has just been shaved... he has sent me some pics of her also looking like the Furless Wonder, I will be posting them soon.

Adorable.

Do kittys need sweaters like puppies when it gets cool? And would a cat put up with a sweater?

In any case. She is lucky to have you.

I have a very long-haired cat named Fluffy (appropriate, huh?) and I would love to have her groomed, but she would hate it. I can't picture Fluffy being still or cooperative at all!

Sweetie is gorgeous either way!

Aww, bless him! It is a shame his lovely lions mane is gone but it will be back before he knows it! I must admit I think that tuft of long fur on the end of his tail is quite sweet. The fact that he was so good about it all shows what a sweet natured cat he is - you surely named him well! :)

Poor little Sweetie, I would have loved to see a video of the fur coming off.....

Isn't it funny, the older we get, the less hair we have...lol

I hate to think what would happen if our Maine Coone needed a hair-cut, it's bad enough when we just need to snip a bit of fur off! He squeeks before we touch him :D He adores his fur and insists on being brushed several times a day, despite me telling him once a day if quite enough!

Two of the cats here had the same haircuts! LOL... I have learned one thing... when you have a cat shaved.. for some reason they think it's great!!!!

I'm sure sweetie is struttin' and enjoyin' his "buzz"!!!

My daughter takes care of the grooming needs of our cat. Good thing too. He's not too fond of the special comb she's had to use to get to his undercoat when he's gotten stuff matted in his fur, and he's not even a "long-haired" cat like yours. She's had to shave her dog a couple of times, because sometimes, there's just no combing it out.

Poor kitty! But I'm glad he will be feeling better. Matted fur is no fun!

I bet it feels great. I groom my my dog myself because he will matt in one day if I don't brush him every night and clip him once in a while. Of course I would have to have him professionally done if he wasn't so darn good about it. He LOVES his bath which he gets three times a week (because I am neurotic about doggy smell). I know he gets all bouncey and happy when I give him a nice haircut. I think they feel lighter without all that fur all over them. :0)

Oh, I love him so much! My sister called as I was watching the video & she said, "What are you laughing at?" So, of course I had to tell her all about you & Sweetie. I love the way he opens his mouth to lick himself. You can sure tell he knows you are talking about him.
I bet he feels so much better, so much lighter!

I need to tell my mother about this. She had her cat done one time (A Himalayan) and the people insisted they had to use general anesthesia, so she never had it done again. They did a sort of poodle cut leaving tufts here and there and that was the funniest thing I had ever seen!

Your cat is lovely and I'll bet really appreciates being rid of that matted hair. I had to resort to cutting mats out of my long haired cat as he was aging years ago. Hadn't thought about it being more of a problem because he was getting older.

Will it grow back fluffy? At first at least? He won't be as much fun to pet with short hair but I understand it's for the best. You should see my dog when it gets into burdock. I have to cut them off with scissors. Good thing she's hairy and doesn't miss it.

Ah!!! Sweetie is so cute and I got tickled when I saw that bit of hair that was left at the end of his tail....like a lion!!! I'm glad he went through the grooming okay. I'm sure he feels much better now and cooler!

Miss White Lilly has some mats underneath her belly but I haven't attempted to cut them off yet. She can be tempermental! I cut a couple off from around her neck and she was fine with that.

I sure miss my poor Gooseberry. :(
But he's not suffering now.

You can hear the love for Sweetie in your voice!! Thanks for the update on dear Sweetie. I have been wondering how it went!

Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at 2:27:00 PM PDT

had this to say:

I think he seems to feel relieved too. I am lucky in that Calista is barely considered a long hair, she is right at the cusp and so she doesn't mat...but I've had my share of Persians that did and it is impossible to get them out without cutting. I agree. Is Sweetie cold until he gets used to it? I wondered if you had to cut some sort of heat on for him until he gets used to it.

And I had wondered about their hair changing. When Darius was a young chap he had shiny slick hair...now it is still soft but it is a very short, very dense coat. You can't even see his skin hardly anymore! I thought I was losing my mind so I dug out his kitten pictures and young male shots. But his hair has just gotten shorter and thicker.

Sweetie is still as handsome, short or long he is still a stud!

I must say, Sweetie is an extremely beautiful Cat. So adoreable, I'm almost wordless.

btw. These days, we go to bed at 9:30 pm and had to wake up no later than 5:50 am. It's hard the first weeks, but then we get used to it. (The sun rises here now at 4:50 Am and sets around 9:35 pm)
At least we have summertemperatures during the days, but still very chilly at nights)

Awwwww.....Sweetie looks terrific! He's just SOOO handsome, with or without his fur. I'm so glad you found a mobile groomer that was able to do this for both you and Sweetie.
I'd bet anything he's very grateful to be rid of all that fur and the mats and snarls.
He looked SO sweet in that video. I really enjoyed that. He's a gorgeous cat!
