The second Emmy category that I watched was:OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A MINISERIES OR A MOVIE
And the Nominees are, in alphabetical order are....
JIM BROADBENT as Lord Longford in "LONGFORD".
Jim Broadbent is a really spectacular actor....I first became fully aware of him in "Enchanted April", (a wonderful wonderful film....). He is a most versatile actor playing in comedy and drama and equally comfortable in both....Most recently he was in "The Chronicles of Narnia", "Vera Drake", "Moulin Rouge" "Topsy Turvy" and The Bridget Jones films playing Bridget's father....His performance in this HBO Film is right up there with the best of all his very wonderful creative performances. An interesting film, too...based on a true story.ROBERT DUVALL as Prentice "Print" Ritter in "BROKEN TRAIL".
Duvall is the consummate actor....beginning back with 'Boo Radley' in "To Kill A Mockingbird" through "The Godfather 1 & 2" to this performance in this very touching miniseries, Robert Duvall is superb, as always. He has never given a bad performance. His playing of the 'simple man of the west' who possesses great values and integrity, is spot on....I had not seen this mini series when it was on so this was a pleasure to watch.Next.....
WILLIAM H. MACY as Clyde Umney & Sam Landry in 'Umney's Last Chance', part of the Nightmares & Dreamscapes from The Stories Of Stephen King.
I was completely unfamiliar with this whole series...and in fact I don't have a clue to what the other stories in this series are.....William H. Macy never gives a bad performance and this particular episode is very interesting because he plays two characters....the writer who is writing this story, and the lead character in the story itself---kind of a 'film noir' detective type, which takes place in a different time period....There is always a bit of a twinkle in his eye no matter what part he is playing....And then.....
MATTHEW PERRY as Ron Clark in "THE RON CLARK STORY".
And last but not least, by any means.....
TOM SELLECK as Jesse Stone in "JESSE STONE: SEA CHANGE".
Another actor that rarely gets the accolades he deserves...This is the latest film in a series of, I believe, three films based on this character Jesse Stone, none of which I had seen before. So, again, it was a pleasure to watch this movie....This is an interesting character for Selleck....He plays a small town alcoholic policeman who cannot seem to get over the end of his marriage, among other things. Selleck was excellent in this very interesting and absorbing movie.
So, of the five performances in this category, I had only seen one of them when it first appeared on television...Jim Broadbent in 'Longford'. This was a very difficult category because the performances were all of such high caliber. The voting sheet is as follows: You give each actor a number from One to Five..."one" being best, and you can only assign each number once.....a difficult task, let me tell you. But, I made my choices and have mailed in my Voting Sheet and my signed affidavit stating that I have watched each DVD completely.
So, if you had the chance to cast your vote by this rating system, assuming you have seen the performances, who would be your number one choice....? (There is only one winner in this category....)

hmm I have seen the Tom Selleck movies and he was fantastic, as always! and I adore William H Macy but did not see the movie..sigh.

I think I'd vote for William H. Macey. I think he's a wonderful character actor and he's certainly played some varied parts.

I love Robert Duvall in anything and everything. Lonesome Dove is one my favorites of all time. Of all the movies/series you named, Broken Trail is the only one I saw.
William H. Macy is an incredible actor!!
The British guy who was in Moulin Rouge is terrific too. He was great in Moulin Rouge. He is very versatile.
I have not seen much of Matthew Perry, so I can't say much about him.

For the past two years I've been acting as one of the judges in our local school literary contest. I think it's a lot easier than what you've been asked to do, but even so, it's HARD to number them and I begin to get confused.
These all look good to me, but I've not seen any! Last night we watched a video I LOVED. It's called An Unfinished Life with Robert Redford, Morgan Freeman, and Jennifer Lopez. It's about grief, death, family, forgiveness, wild nature, and a very tender relationship between two old (straight) coyboys. Very moving. Maybe if I had seen all the films I would find it easier but I doubt it. I also have a strong leaning towards Robert Duvall - but they are all excellent in their different ways. I have been enjoying Matthew Perry in Studio 60. He has matured very nicely:) I did see Longford and liked the way they captured the tetchiness between husband and wife. He must have been an irritating old so and and it can't have been easy for the family to have him lampooned as he was. You must be relieved that it is over. Very well done!

OMG! How on earth do you decide between these wonderful actors? They are all so darn good! It must have been a very difficult decision indeed.
I haven't seen these particular performances but like you I really do feel that Matt Perry and Tom Selleck are seriously under-rated as actors so I would like to see their talent recognised.
The best thing about reading your Emmy posts is that I know at least one of the voters takes the process vary seriously indeed and votes on merit. I’m old enough.
But, here in Norway post WW2, we hade a socialist regime. Backed up by the “Marshall plan” – they now claim they did it themselves. Until 1960, we had no TV. Only one Radio station – state owned.
From 1960 until a new government took place, we started with liberating and allowing “local radio stations” around 1982. The year after we could watch TV – broadcasted from abroad of course, in Norwegian.
First, allowed country covering TV competing with the state owned: 1993.
That’s why I’m not able to comment the shows you had to vote on.
We today, have a socialist regime. They proclaim the only form of justice is: We know your need better than you – and all social and medical care are to be given from the state – i.e. private hospitals are forbidden. Social care – may be, can be done by private organisations. But we will get rid of “private healthcare”.
Grrrr – forget these private frustrations. It’s local elections here – next Monday.
However, I read this post. It’s fascinating. I only wish I really could have taken part of it.
PS. Fall has come – very early – after the “Green Summer”.

I think I need to watch more movies! I have to admit to not having seen any of these Emmy offerings. I'm aware of these particular actors, but I really couldn't tell you what movies they have been in recently. Apart from Wm. H. Macy, I've seen him in quite a few.

He's brilliant. And we both thought Topsy Turvy was fascinating and engrossing.

I see Tom Selleck is still a good looking fellow!! I always liked him.
You have a hard job doing this and I know that you are a fair judge and a good one. It's great to know that folks like you get to vote!
On a side note, I'm still in almond heaven!!! Oh my goodness! I had some that were creme brulee flavored and they went fast!! Then some that were a mint covered and they had melted together, but they are soooo yummy!! I put them in the fridge and when they got hard I broke them apart. I would vote for Matthew - he is such a good actor and has been overlooked for so long because he was part of an ensemble cast for 10yrs.
I know Bruce Willis liked him and thought he was good.
This is a toughie, 'cos I adore William Macy and will usually watch him in anything.
But I haven't seen any of these here in the UK.

As for Outstanding Lead Actor, in the films I have seen, I'd have a difficult time choosing one of the nominees as I am equally fond of Robert Duval and Tom Selleck's performances and could only rate them both a 5 even though that wouldn't do, but I'd absolutely give Matthew Perry a 4
