lunch with the hummingbirds

Lots and lots of Hummingbirds have come to these Agave flowers....Here are a few of them, close-up-and-personal.....The one above knocks me out because his wings are soooo very still...A rarity to catch this while he is in the air....and this could be lunch or breakfast or possibly dinner..... These little guys are so far away and so very small and so fast, I am amazed I have been able to get any pictures of them at all.... I love the feeling of the movement in all these pictures...Of course, some more than others...And the "dance" that goes on.... If this little hummer above isn't dancing...well then, I don't know what you would call it....It's like 'The Twist'...(Anyone remember that dance....lol....) He truly does look like he is shaking his hips---if Hummingbirds were to have hips.... And look at how pretty this ones tail is....The colorfulness of these sweet birds is pretty fantastic, too.....I love the movement in this next picture.... It's almost like his wings are moving in a circle in this picture....That's the other thing that has been so exciting about this photographic journey of the Hummingbirds and the Agave Flower....capturing these dear creatures in their natural habitat.... And above, another display of stunning colors....He almost looks like he is sitting on the flower pod that's beneath him..... And this one above....flying through the air 'with he greatest of ease....'
I love these hummers, and there are so many more...well, I'm having such a wonderfully excessive time and I hope you are enjoying these too...And as always.....Many Many Many more are waiting in the wings.....

Note: All of these pictures were taken from above the Agave Flowers as I stood on my deck looking down....in future posts, you will see views taken from below the Flower Pods and some on a more even keel with them, though still quite far away....Do click on the pictures to see them bigger....

More To Come.......

I'm just astounded at how MANY hummers you have! I would imagine it feels a little bit like Heaven in your yard! I get SO excited when I see my ONE - and the other day I did actually see TWO - one chasing the other! I was wondering if it is mating season for them.... They really are just the sweetest little birds!

I love the gold sunny scene and I've never seen a hummingbird that color. Must be California style. Have you ever seen them interact with other birds? They can be quite aggressive for such little birds. I always do a double take when I see one, thinking maybe it's a big hornet!

I love how the coral color of the underside of the hummingbird's tail matches the flowers in the photo below. These are fantastic, Naomi!!

I so love the hummingbirds. They bring so much joy to a garden and your home. Your photos are fascinating, watching them in action with the agave. I bet you could sit for hours watching them play and feed!

Naomi I'm glad you told7e us from what vantage point you took them. It all helps to create a picture. I saw some - drinking sugar water outside a diner in Canada but I can't remember what noise they made. Do they hum?

Hey! I recognize those hummingbirds!!!

Jason and I are at our parents' house. We arrived yesterday afternoon and had dinner with some dear friends that I haven't seen in over two years. We are enjoying a lazy day here with mom and dad before we fly to Little Rock tomorrow and begin our driving vacation on Wed. I will be back home and finished with my travels on Aug 8th.

It amazes me how well you capture these wonderful birds and with their wings fluttering away! You certainly have a gift for photography.
I'm enjoying them a lot, so thanks for sharing. How fortunate that you have such a show right in your own back yard. Literally.

These are fantastic shots! I love the one where his wings are going a mile a min.

What a sight to wake up to. If I lived in the hills, I'd pour myself a cup of coffee and enjoy the view.

Great shots! I love hummingbirds! When we were at the in-laws, there were about six hummers zipping around the feeder, but I never had my camera when they were all together! I wanted so bad to get a picture of all of them together! Isn't nature wonderful!

Hope you are doing well! Thanks for dropping by, I have not been a good blogger of late, with this move looming ahead. So much to do!

Lots of hugs!!

Hi Naomi! What a luxury to be sitting on your deck and enjoying the hummingbirds at meals and taking great action shots -- alternating the wing movements and clasped ones!

You must have a wonderful garden to attract so many. Envious indeed. Have a good day.

Naomi these photos are fantastic! you definitely captured moments of magic. I just love hummingbirds and although we have a standard feeder we don't get many of them. I would definitely be watching with wonder as you are...and taking photo after photo...as you are. I am SO happy you are sharing the experience.

These tiny birds must be breathtaking to see for real but your photo's of them are wonderful! How marvellous to be able to watch these little birds go about their business every day. We don't have hummingbirds in teh UK at all adn I have never seen one in real life but I am endlessly fascinated by them.

I especailly love the first picture with the stil wings and the one where they are a circular blur. Such a sense of the speed that they fly at and the 'figure 8' motion that birds wings make! I am looking forward to seeing more! :)

Great pictures Naomi! I love the hummingbirds. When they are close to you the sound of their wings is amazing, they go so fast! They certainly are a wonderful little gift from God! I know they love your flowers!! And having that water feature in your garden too! You are a friend to nature!!! They probably tell each other, "Oh go to HER house there, she has the most delightful flowers and water too!!!"

The red head... and the green ones... I'm trying to remember if they're two different special... I know the female emerald is kinda brown... so I'm thinking in these two posts you've captured 2 different kinds of males hummingbirds (and some females)?
