How does a show get to build an audience this way??
It doesn't!
I was just getting ready to watch "Smith" with Ray Liotta...
Hello??...
And....
It is gone.
It is 'off the schedule', delegated to a shelf somewhere.
It is most probably, history, never to be seen again. I don't know, maybe it was terrible and maybe it was great...But now, I'll never get the chance to find out. And in fact, no one will.
The networks are so screwed up. All these decisions of what gets to stay on the air and what gets 'the ax' are based on the Neilson Ratings....which never made any sense to me. Do you know how many homes actually have Neilson boxes in them? 1000. Yup. One Thousand Homes. Each of these boxes supposedly represents some huge number of people, per box....What seems incredible to me is that especially today with Tivo and Taping, etc., they don't really know how many people are watching any given show in that show's actual time slot...cause many of us are watching these shows later, and in some cases the next day or even later.
Sometimes I just hate 'the business of show'.
So, here's my question to you?
Have you watched any of "Studio 60"?
And if you have, what do you feel about it after three episodes?
I saw the last two shows and love it. It's intelligent--and who ever thought Matthew Perry could be so...deep? Here's to a long, long run...and more references to Strindberg:)

Sorry to say I can't help here Naomi.. I haven't seen Studio 60
I've been busy being ticked off that of the 4 shows I really like, they pitted them against each other this year and now I can only watch 2 ! grrrrrrrrrrrr... they put Gray's Anatomy against CSI and Lost against House! (gimme a break!)
I never understood those "ratings" either! I remember a few shows like you mentioned.. after just 3 or 4 episodes they disappeared! It blows my mind that they do that! Why bother putting them on at all if they aren't going to give them a chance to get an audience?????
Martin watched the first episode and really liked it. I like Matthew Perry and want him to do well. I need to put in down on a schedule so I will watch.
I am so bad to get busy in the evenings...especially on this computer and miss the shows!
Glad to see someone giving it high marks.
Remember Seinfeld was on originally at 11:30 and established a cult following and look how big that got. I don't think they bargained for "Lost" to do so well.
There was another one that was cancelled and they brought it back and I can't remember which one...one of the biggies. Maybe Charlie's Angels?
You just never know what is going to be the next big hit do you?
Yes - I LOVE Studio 60. (Actually, I've only watched the first two episodes. This week's is on my TiVo awaiting a more desireable hour of the day for me to watch it!) It is the best new show of the season -- probably the best new show in a few years. Well written, well acted -- hope it stays around for a long time.
OOOOO, I'm first! My hubby and I have been watching Studio 60 and love it! Aaron Sorkin is a wonderful writer and his dialogue is so fun to listen to. It always makes me want to hear it again - on tape, maybe? This week I found myself entering their world and wanting to be there more (like Lost does to me.)
I do hope that they don't mock/make fun of/dis Harriet too much for being a Christian. So far it hasn't been too insulting and I'm looking forward to the exploration of her differences/similarities of her belief system. I appreciate that SHE seems to take it all in stride.
Smith is gone? We watched one episode of it and enjoyed it, too. I love Ray Liotta - he's always so cool!
I hope it does well....
I love Matthew....
Long time no see...
I hope that you are well.....
I've watched Studio 60 since the beginning and I love it, too. Especially so because I have a crush on Bradley Whitford, previously of West Wing. Since WW is gone, this will have to take its place for me. So far, so good!
As for Smith, I started watching that from the beginning, too and I loved it as well. I love Ray Liotta. He's a great actor and I had high hopes for that show. I'm bummed that they removed it. I was actually thinking about this this morning as I was driving home from dropping off the kids. Nielson ratings? Ha! It's all about money. Sigh...oh well.
Have you seen Shark with James Woods? That's another great show! And just an FYI, if you go to the NBC website and click on 30 Rock, then click on Video, you can watch the show now. I already did. And Alec Baldwin makes the show!
I love this show too! And I hope they give it a fair chance. In a strange and very small way it reminds me of the Dick Van Dyke Show because it's about the behind the scenes goings on of a television show. But Matthew Perry and Bradley Whitford have amazing chemistry and I'm really looking forward to seeing where this is going!
I watched the premiere episode in its entirety and I think I've caught bits of the next two episodes? I thought the writing was okay, that they were finding their feet. I believe I'll watch a couple more episodes to see if it can capture my attention more fully. It hasn't gotten there yet for me. My partner has watched every episode in its entirety and I believe she likes it. The shows that have captured my attention immediately this season (aside from Lost and Prison Break which are return series) are Vanished, Heros and Jericho. All three pulled me in immediately and I'm still with them. We'll see how they turn out. Oh, and I began watching Kidnapped because I like Jeremy Sisto's acting, but they've already cancelled that show. *sigh*
I haven't watched it but have read good things about it. I need to get back into the swing of watching some network programming but for years we didn't get any of it out here and I got out of the habit of even looking at what was on knowing I'd never be able to see other than as a fuzzy image.
We love this show, Naomi!
The pacing is exceptional, the writing tight, the relationships engaging. And I honestly never know what is going to happen next. Brilliant move on M. Perry's part to do a drama after Friends. I've also read that it's ratings are through the roof. So I think it's more than safe.

I am sorry, but I haven't seen Studio 60... But I am very curious about this show!
Well obviously I have not seen it because it isn't airing here. I have heard mixed reviews on how it is doing ratings wise.
Wow Smith is gone already ! We saw the promo's for it while we were in LA and of course saw Ray at the Emmys, his face is messed up LOL
I tuned in because I'm a fan of Matthew Perry ... and I've been enjoying the show. I hope it sticks around. There was a good article in today's Globe and Mail about it and how the target audience will keep attracting the advertisers.
Re "Smith", I loved the first show ... missed the second show ... and thought the third show was boring. I was very excited with the first show and thought it had so much promise. But, to me, it didn't live up to it.
I caught the part where they were mocking the character for being a Christian. While her character did "take it" in the right way, it just seemed like this was unnecessary. I didn't care for it, but then I wasn't fond of West Wing.
I'm more drawn to the CSI shows (and I do fight the urge to watch); probably because of my work.
I watched a couple of "Smiths" and it was very strange. That Ray Liotta's character had such a separate life from his family was unique. But the coldness with which one character killed to men was difficult and the longer I watched, the less I liked any of them. The second show was more of the same with the lies, callous disregard for law and human life a bit much. I don't think we are ready to see the bad guys win every week... I hope we are never ready to glorify that.
Naomi, yes, I'm totally hooked! I only have two complaints: 1) I think Amanda Peat is wrong, wrong, wrong for the show. She walks around with a smirk and doesn't act or dress like a network president. 2) I wish they'd talk slower or use subtitles. Sometimes it's hard to hear.
By the way, one of your questions is on Michele for tomorrow, but the link on your name is wrong and takes you to a dead end. Just wanted you to know.
Hope you're well.
P.S. I also just watched 30 Rock and thought it was pretty funny.
I haven't had a chance to watch, but will have to now. I'm always looking for something good to watch because I HATE reality TV.
(food tv and home improvement shows don't count as reality shows do they?)
Haven't seen "studio 60" but may give it a whirl based on your recommendation 'cause I wholeheartedly concurred with your opinion of "West Wing" which I had been watching long before I ever found your blog.
The TV ratings have been a crock dating back to the '50's. The networks have only gotten worse about not giving a program a chance to build a following. The time they allow now (3 shows) is nothing short of ridiculous.
Seems to me with all the competition for viewers time, with TV cable et al, why not program the top shows at different times (instead of against each other) and they could show really good audience numbers for everybody.
But then, I'm sure my opinion doesn't merit consideration since I'm only a viewer ... and not in that coveted age group.
Hope the show does well so that we can see it overseas too!!
Let's hope it lasts long enough to come to the UK....god knows, we need some decent TV....
But, with the current trend of cancelling shows on a whim - I'm not hopeful of a long run....
TV People!! You gotta let a show bed-in before it's cancelled....and please *please* consider overseas figures as well as Neilson ratings....

What I love is all the old tv shows that were only on ofr a season or two finding new audiences and new life thanks to the magic of DVD!
I just love this show. Studio 60 is one of the best shows this year. I love the writing. The last I heard it was just hanging on. Let's all hope that they give it the chance it needs and the ratings will improve.
Gloria
That is so sad about Hal Lynch.

I haven't seen Studio 60. I haven't had time to try out any of the new shows.
Awhile back, FOX had a show called Firefly that was really good. I never saw it when it was on TV, but my daughter owns the episodes and the movie Serenity based on the series. FOX showed the episodes in the wrong order when it aired, and then they pulled the show very quickly. I guess the show has more popularity now than it did when it was on TV. I agree with you that networks have an itchy trigger finger. They don't have any patience to let a show develop and attract an audience.
Firefly is such a good show. If FOX was smart, they'd give it another chance and show the episodes in the right order this time around. DUH!! :)
I have not watched Studio 60, but I do not watch reality shows, so maybe I'll check it out. I do recall the Larry Sanders Show and it was okay.
Amazing info about the Neilson ratings! I always wondered how they figured those things out. They vote on something and I say that no one asked for my opinion! Well, I guess that only those 1000 people's opinions count. How screwed up is that thinking! Duh!! Hollywood needs a smart lady like you to help them figure out some good shows for us!
Sweety loves the show but I've gotta admit that I wasn't so crazy about it at first. It's growing on me.
I anticipated this show because I loved West Wing and was looking for something intertesting, challenging, and entertaining like that and since it's done by the same writers I had high hopes. I've watched all three episodes and think it's great. Funny, how so much of it is on they NEED good ratings while the show itself does too to survive! I'm hoping people catch on...it is a show within a show! I also like The New Adventures of Old Christine. I think Julia Louise Dreyfess does the best female physical comedy around. You know right up there with Lucy.
Oh my gosh, I saw the 1st show of Studio 60 and LOVED it, but have since forgotten about it!!! How could I? Damn! I really like it too.
I agree about the networks. Last season there was a comedy, Sons & Daughters, oh it was the funniest thing we'd seen in ages. And after like 5 or 6 shows? GONE! It's so hard for us to find a show that truly makes us laugh, we found 1 & they took it away. Suckers!
I haven't watched it yet, but I am wanting too (especially now that i know you like it....it gives me great hope for it)
I have never understood the whole Neilson system either....and I can't believe that only 1000 people have those boxes-that is crazy! Absolutely crazy!
Totally and compleely LOVE IT. I love it so much I rewatch the episodes online. Did you know you can do that? I think it's a brilliant showcase of great writing and acting. Love Matthew Perry for NOT being Chandler Bing. It's just the best television on television right now. And I'm a HUGE Gray's Anatomy fan too!
You might recall that last month I blogged about the new season and Studio 60 was at the top of my list for watching. I'm ashamed to admit, I haven't really caught one episode yet. BUT...hubby has seen it and has raved about it. He really likes it and if it kills me, I'm plunking myself down tomorrow evening to watch it....I'll return back with my views.
It was SOOO great to talk to you on the phone Friday morning, Naomi. God, I felt like I'd known you forever...weren't we just the two chatterboxes? LOL
