a little of this and that....

Since I haven't been blogging for a while.....many things have happened that I want to address, a least a little bit.....
Robin Williams death---such a loss to his family and friends and to the whole world. An insanely talented genius---he gave us so much joy and laughter, and also brought us to tears with his limitless gifts as an actor......The pain he lived with was the other side of this.  And the aloneness he must have felt in those moments before taking his life.....
My heart goes out to all those who loved him----particularly his children.....

The day after Robin Williams died, one of the last of the Golden Age Stars of The Studio System---Lauren Bacall,---died, at age 89.
I'm surprised at how little has been written about her considering she was an 'Icon', and a 'Legend' in the truest sense.

Bogie and Bacall.......there never was and there never will be another pairing like those two.....
Her career was quite incredible.....films and then Broadway---winning two Tony's.....And finally, being given an Honorary Oscar, long overdue.
I met her once---very briefly---when she was married to Jason Robards and we did the CBS Television "special" of "SPOON RIVER"....we taped in in New York, and Robards was one of the four actors.

He was still drinking at the time and that made our rehearsals somewhat difficult.....

It was the middle of Summer in New York City, including all the heat and humidity one can imagine.....

The day of the 'taping', Bacall came to the backstage area where all of us were, having brought Jason something he had forgotten, at home.  It was a very wifely thing for her to do, and I was reminded of the fact that we are all just people, trying to live our lives as best we can.......She was dressed in a very light weight summer cotton dress---just like the rest of us----but, it was hard to forget she was Lauren Bacall, the 'star', and yet---there she was, just being a helpful wife to her hung over husband.
That marriage ended and eventually so did Jason Robards drinking, Bless him.

For any of you who want to see a slew of her films, Turner Classic Movies is devoting September 15th, starting at 8pm, eastern time, I believe that will continue for 24 hours.
This will be a day worth watching, if you can.
Lauren Bacall had a good long life and a great career.....And as I said, she is the last of those very BIG Movie Stars......The end of an era.....

The Emmy's are tonight and I will be watching, having voted in a number of categories, as I do, each year.....
And my dear sweet longtime friend, the incredibly talented Mitzie Welch, will be included in the
"In Memorium" section, having died on
June 10th of this year.....

I was very touched to know she will be included, and rightfully so.....

She and her dear husband Kenny have won a bunch of Emmy's over the years, 5 to be exact, having written for The Carol Burnett show for all the years it was on Television----and they wrote a number of 'specials' , too......"Barbra Streisand and Other Musical Instruments", plus lots of other terrific television shows....to see all 14 of their Emmy Nominations, go here.

I've been watching a lot of films on TCM this month, and it has been glorious!  Every August they devote each day to a different 'star'......Tuesday, August 26th is Sophia Loren, and each day after that is another wonderful actor or actress through August 31st.

Nothing else really happening here on my Hill.....just trying to get through each day, as best I can........

I've been away from my blog for a couple of weeks.....
I'm afraid my physical problems have kind of overtaken my life--Big Time!
Many many problems, but the most exhausting one is coughing up endless amounts of disgusting phlegm---sorry, TMI, I know......but, it is part and parcel of the lung disease I live with, and have been living with for many years now.....
And this problem has increased in volume.....
I should have stock in 'Kleenex'----I go through at last one big box, a day---sometimes more.
So......my energy is just depleted beyond words, from this----along with some other unspeakable problems....
Enough said.
I'll be back when I can....and I will visit you all when I can, too.....

More To Come.......

Robin Williams' tragic death affected us all...I know it did me. And I still tear up over his sad passing. He was a unique talent; on the one hand he could make us laugh until we cried; and on the hand he had the innate ability to tear at our heart strings; his pathos was palpable.

Lauren Bacall, too, was unique...a one-off. Our magazines and newspapers down this way gave wide coverage on her life. She was beautiful; she held herself with dignity; and she had such a strength of character.

I'll be keeping an eye on the Emmies, too. I'm just hoping they are telecast on one of our channels. I love the Award Ceremonies.

Take good care of yourself, Naomi. Take it steady. Hugs. :)

I watched the Emmys last night - most of it anyway. I was touched, as always, by the tributes to those who have passed away. Lovely that your friend was honored. And how we'll all miss Robin Williams! I still haven't reconciled myself to that tragic loss.

Thank you for the tip about the Lauren Bacall film fest on Friday - I'll make sure I tune in. I may DVR the whole thing, who knows? Love your memory of her.

It's good to see you on blogger today - I've missed you. I understand the need to take a break now and then, but just post when you can.

So sorry to hear about your health problems getting worse. Just take care of you. That's the important part. And on Robin, I agree, sad. Bacall was good in all her films. I liked how she played the politician's wife in My Fellow Americans. She was so great. I watch the old ones with Bogart every so often. They looked so good together.

I was devastated by the news of Robin's death. He belonged to all of us and there are very few who won't miss him. I hope he knows how beloved he was/is.

Lauren Bacall was a beauty and a classy woman. She will be missed too.

I didn't know your friend, but her talent will be missed as well, especially behind the scenes.

I am so sorry that your illness is getting worse, Naomi, and I hope someone comes up with something to help you, and soon.

I'm with Judy and hope they discover something soon that will give you ease. New miracle medicines come out every day. I just know yours is soon to appear.
It has been a tough time of loss in the entertainment world. I followed Robin from his Mork days and always wanted to be Lauren Bacall. I liked her choice in husbands.
I did not know about Jason's problem till after they separated. I always enjoyed him as an actor.
How nice it must have been to see your friend remembered in such a way.
Take care and be better soon.

Sorry about your health problems. While I'm sure my issues are no where near as bad as yours, I can relate to breathing problems, coughing up phlegm, and going through boxes of tissues. I've been dealing with those issues most of my life. I'll keep checking back with you, to see when you post. I've been absent a lot lately too. School has started back and I've been absorbed with all that.

*sigh* I don't think I will ever get over Robin Williams passing after all he did for so many and the laughter he brought to us all.

I am so sorry that your health problems are such that they sap all your strength... I very much hope that you at least have some days better than others.. *hugs*

about the Emmy's... the only thing I wished had happened (but didn't of course) would have been for Peter Dinklage (the dwarf from Game of Thones) had received an Emmy... he has brought so much to that series for 4 seasons, and he's really a super actor! ah well.. maybe next year.

please take care Naomi.. xoxoxoxo

I love your storytelling and how grounding it is. I always thought Lauren Bacall was one of the most beautiful women in the world and she reminded me of my mother.

Everyone has bee effected by Robin Williams' death and it brings up so many lingering human questions. He reminds me how unique and unrepeatable we all are.

For me, I'm glad you told us a little of what you are dealing with because my mind has been going to all sorts of places wondering about your day to day struggle. I wish you peace, as much as you can get. xo

My dear Naomi, first of all I hope you have a nice and pleasant weekend and feel much better!!

I'm sad with Robin Williams' tragic death...
Lauren Bacall was so beautiful, charming and so talented too!

Sounds great that you voted on Emmy's in a number of categories!
Just great too that you have been watching a lot of films on TCM. As I live in country, and there are no movie theater near my house, to watch films on tv is my alternative.

Many hugs my dear! :)

Oh no I'm so sorry you are suffering so badly. Sounds a nightmare. I'm not surprised you are so weak if you are coughing up stuff all day long. Poor you.

I was quite surprised about how little coverage Lauren Bacall received too. I think the news about Robin Williams overshadowed her death which is sad. Strangely enough I watched him in the film "Angriest Man in Brooklyn" and really enjoyed it. That was on the plane journey going out to the States, and on the day we returned the news came out about his death. So tragic, I loved many, many of his films.

had this to say:

So sorry to hear you've been unwell. I hope that you are gaining strength.

Both Robin Williams and Lauren Bacall received significant coverage here in the UK.

With Robin Williams as well as comedy, there was also the aspect of him playing some fractured or edgy roles in some of his movies.

As you say, with Lauren Bacall, there was that great star quality; its fascinating that you have met her, via your links with Jason Robards.

I didn't get to see the Emmys show, although I've heard the results by now. I'd be interested to get your take on the outcomes.

I can understand Breaking Bad, but less so the Brit series Sherlock Holmes this time around. And what about Fargo? True Detective had me engrossed and saw some great acting and story telling too.

Some of the other shows that won seemed to me to be OK rather than fantastic. Big Bang. Modern Family. Fun enough, but formulaic, or what?

Maybe some safe voting?? But I guess you'll have the inside track!

Best wishes and I hope you are feeling better.

It mustn't be easy and I'm sorry you're going through this, my friend. I hope today is a good day for you.

I will tune in on 9/15 if I am around to catch some of Lauren Bacall's classic films. She seemed like such a powerful and inspirational woman to me although I don't know much about her. Sept. 15th is also the anniversary of the day I met my husband in 1989...so who knows what we'll be doing. Our wedding anniversary is Sept. 7th, this Sunday, so that will probably be the day to celebrate SOMETHING. :)

Yes, Robin Williams, what a loss. I can't imagine the heartache his family and closest friends must be going through and the "if onlys..."

Please know that I am thinking of you and if you feel up to chatting, please call me. I never know if I'm bothering you and my time is hit or miss so I don't call as often as I'd like. Hugs and much love, Ily

I'm so sorry your coughing has taken a turn for the worse. As you know, I can not only sympathize but empathize, though things are fairly smooth on my end these days. But I know those sleepless nights where it is impossible to get into any position where you DON'T cough and need to turn over. I seem to live on Ricola during those times. Ricola and tea. And my shaky vest. I hope it's just an exacerbated period and that things calm down soon.

I thought it so unfortunate that Lauren Bacall and Robin Williams died at the same time. Two greats. It reminded me of when Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson died on the same day. Poor Farrah -- she didn't get her due -- more like a "by the way, Farrah Fawcett also died." Bacall seemed to get about the same treatment and she was such a classic, an icon. Genuine talent. Sigh. And what can you say about Robin W. that hasn't already been said. Yes, a tough time.

Please take care, my friend. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this.

It was good to read your deserved tributes you have paid to our latest great losses in the film and theatre world but I am so sorry you have this wretched illness and admire your courage in continuing to bring us your knowledge and insight into the film and theatre world.
I particularly admired Lauren through out her life.
Over here a great sadness is the loss of Richard Attenborough. I remember his kindness, his innate decency and his joy in film and theatre. God bless Richard.
Sending you warmest hugs Naomi.

Hi Naomi - another comment from me and this one is a bit off topic...

I saw your notes re the Streetcar NT Live and have done some digging at the NT Shop. No DVDs and something about copyright restrictions.

Anyway - there is an NT Live Facebook page which covered the production and has some pictures of the setup etc. I thought it might be of interest...

The passing of Robin Williams was so very sad. I thought he was such a great talent – everybody did actually. With so much talent and popularity it is hard to realize that he was just like a regular human being, with his sorrow and problems. Just as you said for Lauren Bacall – she was being a helpful wife when you saw her, not just being a "star."

Take great care of yourself – I hope that with rest and good care your health will get better. I’m so sorry to hear that your lungs are acting up. My thoughts are with you. Hugs, VB

Hate it that you have to live with a lung disease, Naomi. I sympathize because I, too have this and live via inhaler. Hate it! I know how it takes all the energy from your very soul. Try, try to stay strong. I know just by visiting here that you are much loved. xo

Hello sweet Naomi,I so enjoyed this post. I feel like I know a famous person reading your blog. You have such an insight into so many people in this industry. And as you say everyone is just a human being.

As a teenager I had a mirror with Bogart etched on to it. I was obsessed with Bacall and Bogart. Also, I could never get over how Robards and Bogart looked very much alike. I saw a recent picture of her children too and her older son and daughter are the image of Bogart and the younger son the image of Robards. I am not sure she got a look in he he.

I am so sorry that you have been struggling with your health. Thank goodness for Kleenex hey. I recall my mother saying she wished she had shares in them too once. She suffers from terrible allergies. I know you do the best you can and you keep occupied with as many things as you are able. It must be distressing nonetheless.

I am so glad you have the movies to watch and they can take your mind off things for a time.

Anyway the important thing is that you do conserve as much energy as you can and I hope you are getting lots of good care.

By the way that photo of you with the others is adorable. Just a gorgeous and talented girl.

Take Care and lots of love from Australia
