amaryllis

Some dear friends sent me an Amaryllis this past Christmas (alright alright...it was Earl H.)....and this is a first, for me. There were these bulbs----six of them in a lovely basket...(actually, I think there is another bulb hidden under the dirt...because this little sliver has appeared as of today....! (See this picture right below....)So, never having gone through this fascinating process before, I am having a wonderful time documenting what is happening. I am sorry I didn't start on the first day of arrival, but....well, I didn't. So here are a few pictures over these couple of weeks, from the first appearance of a few of the slivers of green, to today..... So, this was about three days or so into the appearance of "green slivers"....very very exciting to me...partly because it took me a while to figure out the best place for these bulbs given the instructions that came with them....They are on one of the sideboards in the Dining Room....plenty of light, plenty of warmth, and mostly deferred sun in the late afternoon.
The above picture is two days later....Only two days and there was growth! These Amaryllis are quite extraordinary, aren't they? And it is not just the angle of the picture. There was truly growth, believe me.

This next picture is only three days after that....Amazing Amazing! Because we are already seeing a 'pod'....! A sweet sweet pod that has the growing blossom inside it.... Yeah! Right there in the middle is the very dear pod! The first of six, I am hoping....And, so then I decided to wait for maybe a week. Well, almost a week, if your week is only six days long....And quite a lot had happened in those short but very productive six days...Look Below, Please.... And this, too.... Here's that first pod getting bigger and better and it's stem, much longer. I guess this is what they do, huh?

Then, today....! This is a closer look at that first original pod that I first noticed on January 17th....It is so lush and juicy looking, isn't it?The picture at the top of this post is today, and as you can see from it and this one just below a whole lot is happening in that basket, including the little sliver in the second picture from the top..... Here above is another little pod just beginning to do it's thing. I just love nature so much....It is, to me, one of the most exciting things in our world....wether it's plants and flowers growing, or people and animals forming and growing, it is all miraculous and beautiful.

A fellow blogger, Suzann, from Journey To A New Life, who many of you visit, has an Amaryllis growing right now, too....She is a veteran where these wonderful plants are concerned and I learned a lot about what to do after these beautiful flowers have bloomed reading that post of hers....Click on Suzann's name and pay her a visit to read about her five year old Amaryllis....Meanwhile....here is where we are here on the hill with these amazing plants.....Stay tuned, for more to come.....So join me while we watch all these pods now showing, plus all the ones yet to come do their wonderful magical thing....Oh, yes....there will be much much more to come on these babies, I promise you.....

  3. The Amaryllis will be lovely Naomi!! So sweet of him to get these for you so you can watch as they unfold. In that first picture with the painting behind it I thought the hand was holding something over it and it took me a little bit to figure out that that was a painting and not a real arm!! LOL

  5. Every year before Christmas I look at teh Amaryllis pots and wonder if mine would grow. I think they are beautiful flowers, and I look forward to watching these grow with you.

  6. I received an amaryllis for Christmas too. Also my first experience with them. Just one bulb, though. I wonder what that says about my friends.

My bloomed the other day. I took a pic but haven't posted it yet.

Be sure to show us your plants once they've bloomed!

  7. I love amyrillis! A friend gave me a plant 3-4 years ago and I watched it grow and bloom, like you are. I wonder what color yours is? Mine was coral, with deep magenta stripes in the center of the petals. They last a long time, Naomi, so you are in for a real treat. You may have to fix a "cage" for them, as they get taller and heavier, they tend to fall over.

  8. Oh, what fun! I remember the first time I ever saw an amaryllis, one of the ladies at work had one. There was no natural light at all where she kept it and yet, it still grew. It was amazing. :)

  9. I don't remember what colors these come in... red I know. That is the exciting thing, wondering what the colors will be. A bit different than watching the cacti I bet but just as fascinating.

I think I had an Amarillys in my garden. If you have the time, take a look on my post:

Last but not least, thank you for your visit and also for the kind and enthusiastic words about my post SÃO PAULO'S SKYSCRAPERS!

  15. Me again, Naomi! Thanks my dear for the visit to Glance-Olhar.
About the Amarillys it’s very curious because I'm pretty sure that I didn't plant this flower in my garden. I think the seeds comes with the vegetal ground. And I am glad they germinated in my garden.

  17. A few years ago,my oldest granddaughter brought me an amyrillis plant in a ceramic pot that already had a beautiful bloom. I had not had one before and should have called a local florist to learn how to care for it. because I didn't secure the long stalk and unfortunately it collapsed and I couldn't revive it. They are beautiful and seeing your photos makes me want another one.

What's the deal with that lovely work of art on the wall behind? Fascinating!

  21. Exciting plants, and as you wrote, suzanne has some very informing posts on her blog.

It is interesting to follow these plants from onion to flowering. So fast growing and such beautiful flowers.

And with your photodocumentation, it's really fascinating

  22. Any day now! It's like a fast forward animation.

I was intrigued by the photo in the background. At first I thought it was a real hand. Is the hand painting? I love the picture that appears to be being painted.

As Arnold says: "I'll be back!"

  25. I'm horrid with plants and have better luck with flowers, which isn't saying much. ;)
Love your documentaries of everyday life. Great photos. You're so good with gardening and growing things. I admire you.

  26. Ohhhhh BOY are you gonna be REWARDED here soon! I can't WAIT!!!! Mine are all done and the flowers have all died away.... nothing left but the leaves now. You are just going to be in for an EXPLOSION of color! This is SO exciting!

  27. Just thought I'd let you know that I got round to sending an email to support a star for Larry as I promised I would. I hope it helps.

Can't wait to see what colour your amaryllis are.

  28. Oh! You just reminded me, I should try to "force" some bulbs indoors. And just think, it's not too far off now that the bulbs outside will spring up.
Last fall I planted a BUNCH of different kinds of daffodils, so I am excited to see how they look this spring!

  29. Oh I can't wait to see when they bust open:-). I love these flowers, and they are so easy to grow. Which is a good thing for me *giggles*.

  30. Hello again.

I got an email back from the Hollywood star people. All they did was forward me a link to an form to nominate someone for a star!

Perhaps someone could organise an online petition?

I notice you haven't been round as much. I hope you are well?

  31. Glad to hear that you are okay. I susepcted that you were either under par or busy or both but just wanted to check :-)

No problem about the meme - I don't ever expect anyone to do them really and to tell you the truth I get a bit peeved when I am tagged in that manner, but as an honest person I always come clean and do my blog duty!

I'm looking forward to more amaryllis pics soon, and some more of your garden!

  32. Gord's mom has one too. It's amazing how fast hers grew!

  33. Naomi, I got my first Amaryllis bulb for Christmas 2009 and had no idea what it would do. It grew so damn fast that I thought it was a pod from "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"!! It was quite beautiful, but boy, did it grow fast!

a side note...I was enjoying picking a post at random and reading them, but I now think I should start at the beginning and watch your story unfold as you wrote it. You obviously love flowers, but you write about so many things all of which interest me. I need to google Betty's husband to see if he ever got his star.
